Looking for the best tequila to buy? Want to try new varieties of the popular agave spirit? Check out our round up of the best tequilas brands to try this summer...
Tequila is a distilled spirit made from the cooked and fermented juice of blue agave. Most tequilas fall into three categories.
- Blanco tequila is unaged and bottled within two months, and is typically used in cocktails. It usually has strong agave and earthy flavours.
- Reposado tequilas have been aged in wooden casks for at least two months – which mellows the spirit and imparts oaky notes. Try them in cocktails like margaritas, or drink them neat.
- Añejo tequilas are barrel-aged for at least one year and are typically very smooth to drink, with spice, vanilla and caramel notes – they’re perfect for sipping.

Best tequilas to buy 2023
Espolòn Blanco Tequila
A great-value, unaged tequila, smooth and sweet, with lime peel notes and a subtly peppery finish. Easy-drinking, this works well in most cocktails.
Mijenta Reposado Tequila
Aged for up to six months in oak and acacia casks, this has delicate vanilla, honey and floral grassy notes. Use to give a margarita depth.
Código 1530 Rosa Blanco
This blanco tequila gets its pretty pink hue from ageing in Californian cabernet sauvignon barrels. It's light and delicate, with subtle sweet red fruits.
Storywood Tequila Speyside 14 Añejo
Tequila with a Scottish twist! Aged for 14 months in single-malt Scotch whisky barrels, expect inviting notes of caramel and nuts, and rich oakiness.
VIVIR Tequila Añejo
Matured in bourbon casks for 18 months, this aged tequila has a lush vanilla and oak character, alongside agave herbaceousness. One for sipping slowly.
Próspero Tequila Blanco
Designed by Stella Anguiano, one of the first female tequila distillers, this award-winning spirit has a vibrant agave character. Bright, fruity and rounded, it's a great premium blanco tequila for cocktails such as margaritas and palomas.
Komos Reposado Rosa Tequila
Pink tequila typically gets its colour from barrel ageing, as is the case with premium brand Komos’s reposado expression. Aged for two months in Californian red wine barrels, which tinges the spirit a delicate blush hue, it’s full of summery red berry notes as well as grassy agave herbaceous character. Enjoy in a refreshing long drink with soda or tonic water.
Cazcabel Honey Tequila
A winning marriage of blanco tequila with Yucatán and New Zealand manuka honey, this is a fragrantly rich but not sickly sweet flavoured tequila – a good entry-level option for those new to the spirit, or those who prefer liqueurs.
Herradura Reposado Tequila
Aged in wood for 11 months, this tequila has a really mellow burn, more like a fine whisky than a tequila. Smoky, smooth and a little sweet.
Código 1530 Añejo
Aged for 18 months in Californian cabernet barrels, agave herbaceous oomph is matched with a backbone of caramel, oakiness and spice. Sip neat or try in a manhattan.
Ocho 8 Resposado Tequila
A single-estate tequila (meaning all the agave used was taken from the same field) rested for two months in oak barrels: this is extremely smooth and balanced, with restrained vanilla notes.
Tapatio Añejo Tequila
Ageing for 18 months in oak gives this tequila a rich and almost creamy character, with subtle spice and caramel notes that complement a delicate herbaceousness.
Maestro DOBEL Diamante
This blend of aged tequilas is charcoal filtered, resulting in a bright, light and sweet spirit with an appealingly soft and silky character.
Don Fulano Blanco Tequila
Silver tequilas are usually seen as a great base for drinks such as margaritas, but this delicate number, with its herbal and fruity notes, is just as enjoyable sipped neat. If you do want to mix it, try pairing with tonic water.
