  • 1 bottle red wine
  • 100g soft light brown sugar
  • 4 cloves
  • 2 sticks cinnamon, plus extra to garnish
  • 1 orange, 2 strips of peel, plus extra slices to garnish
  • 1 lemon, 2 strips of peel
  • 2 star anise
  • 50ml brandy, (optional)


  • STEP 1

    Mix togetherall the ingredients (except the brandy, if using) in a large pan and warm over a low heat for 10-15 minutes or until fragrant and steaming but not boiling. Stir in the rum or brandy for the final minute, if using. Ladle into mugs or heatproof glasses, discarding any aromatics.
