How to make a purple rain... step-by-step video

Our drinks expert Hannah Guinness shares her at-home bar tips to help you take your purple rain to the next level.

What is a purple rain?

Fruity, long and colourful, the purple rain gets its distinctive hue from mixing together blue curaçao and grenadine.

Purple rain ingredients

Make sure you invest in the best ingredients, particularly a good-quality lemonade and a decent grenadine. For the latter, it's easy (and often cheaper) to make your own. Try our grenadine recipe here.

Purple rain bar hacks and garnishes

The recipe calls for a lot of grenadine but it's essential for that all-important purple colour. If that makes the drink a little sweet for your taste, try adding more lime juice.

Purple rain recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp blue curaçao
  • 25ml lime juice
  • 75ml grenadine
  • lemonade, to top up
  • lime wedge, to garnish

Method

  • STEP 1

Pour the vodka, curaçao, lime juice and grenadine into a highball glass filled with ice and gently stir.

  • STEP 2

Top up with lemonade and garnish with a lime wedge. (If it’s not purple enough, try halving the amount of curaçao, or increase the grenadine by another 25ml.)
